Sri Lanka, the paradise island – popularly known as the ‘pearl of the Indian Ocean’ is full of rich culture and heritage. With warm weather all year round, beautiful sandy beaches and its tropical fruits, delicious cuisine, fabulous gem collection and variety of wildlife.

Sri Lanka Culture and Heritage

This Island’s history dates back to over 2550 years and was once ruled by kings. The island is pre-dominantly a Buddhist country, but is also home to many other races and religions. The diverse races have each brought about their own unique cultures and languages during the past centuries. Migrants from south India who came to Sri Lanka settled up North and built many beautiful Kovils that can still be seen today, The Arabic traders who came in built magnificent mosques and the Portuguese and Dutch built beautiful forts and churches that still exist today.

After over two decades of ethnic conflict, the country now stands united as one and is one of the best places that can be explored for tourists. Ancient Sri Lankan Kings have built many spectacular world renowned sites such as monasteries, reservoirs, magical gardens and other intriguing monuments of art. Most of these ancient ruins are in the cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

There are many UNESCO World Heritage sites also in Sri Lanka such as the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Dalada Maligawa (also known as the temple of the tooth of Lord Buddha), and also the Cave Temples of Dambulla and the city of Galle and it fort.


Sri Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean – right off the Southern tip of India.


Over countless millennia, Mother Nature has produced a breathtakingly majestic work of art by bestowing a wide range of exquisite topographic features on this ancient island, making Sri Lanka one of the most scenic wonders of the world. Three zones are distinguishable by elevation. These would be the central highlands, the plains and the coastal belt.


Sri Lanka has a population of 21 million people. Ethnic groups being Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors, Malays and Burghers


Sri Lanka is the Island of Sun, sand and sea! There is plenty of sunshine and warm weather all year round. However the temperature does decrease in the higher levels / hill country. Sri Lanka also has 2 Monsoon periods – May and July in the south-west region and between December and January in the north-east. Sri Lanka’s main and most frequently spoken language would be Sinhalese. Although Tamil and English follow suit and English is spoken all over the Island so communication is not a problem when it comes to tourists who travel in Sri Lanka.


Sri Lanka’s majority religion is Buddhism. Although there are many Christians, Hindus and Muslims on the Island as well.
